A new grading scale takes effect in Fairfax County Public Schools this year, but retroactive weight has already been added for AP and honors classes taken by continuing high school students. Your student can sign into Blackboard -- http://fcps.blackboard.com/ -- to take a look. Click on Family Connections, then on My Profile. The student’s updated GPA should appear at the bottom of the profile. A weight of 0.5 was added over the summer for honors courses in mathematics, science, English and social studies, on the recommendation of Superintendent Jack Dale. The FCPS School Board previously approved changing the weight for AP and IB classes from 0.5 to 1.0 retroactively; student transcripts had already been updated to include that change. The new grading scale approved by the school board last January will go into effect with the new academic year. It is a modified 10-point scale that uses pluses and minuses. It is consistent with the grading scales used by the College Board and many universities. New FCPS Grading Scale A (93-100) = 4.0 / A- (90-92) = 3.7 B+ (87-89) = 3.3 / B (83-86) = 3.0 / B- (80-82) = 2.7 C+ (77-79) = 2.3 / C (73-76) = 2.0 / C- (70-72) = 1.7 D+ (67-69) = 1.3 / D (64-66) = 1.0 F (below 64) = 0.0 Contact your student’s high school counselors with questions or concerns about your student’s GPA. |
