Greetings Hayfield Families and Community: The 2010-11 school year is now in full swing and we’re off to a great start. The students are adjusting to their new schedules and teachers are working hard to provide the very best instruction. We have now established professional learning communities (PLCs) throughout the school on both sides of the building. Teachers of common subject areas are sharing effective teaching strategies and lesson plans collaboratively. They’re also developing common assessments and analyzing data within their PLCs. This will allow teachers to identify and work with students who need extra support or enrichment. Hawk Time will continue to serve us well with providing students an opportunity during the school day to receive instructional support. I have enjoyed visiting classrooms throughout the building to observe our teachers in action. We have a very talented staff indeed. As important, I’ve very much enjoyed getting to know the students here at Hayfield. I say with genuine sincerity that these are the most amazing students I’ve ever worked with. Our students are creative, smart and appreciative. Further, their positive school spirit is evident. For example, most of our students proudly wear their Hayfield orange and white, especially on “spirit Fridays”. We appreciate the many compliments you’ve shared with us regarding our new kiss and ride pattern. In working with VDOT, our security specialist Mr. Chuck Arnone as had the traffic light timer changed to help us with getting parents quicker access to our school from Old Telegraph Road. This fact, combined with our new “1 way flow” through the kiss and ride entrance has made our school safer and the process has become very efficient. We appreciate your support and patience as we have worked through this process. With Homecoming week as well as the various holidays on the near horizon, students will have many exciting experiences here in the land of the Hawk. I look forward to celebrating with you at the various events and activities scheduled throughout the Fall. Important dates for your calendar:
I can think of no better way to close then by saying that Hayfield Secondary School is the best school in all of Fairfax County Public Schools. I appreciate your help with spreading this fact as we continue to build momentum together. Talk to you soon and as always, remember… Birds Fly, Hawks Soar!
